End of week 2 of dedicated training for my next Ironman 70.3 race here in Raleigh, which is coming up on May 31st.

I have been asked how much time do I spend right now training each week. Well, last week I totaled: 5 hours and 35 minutes – which breaks down to: 1:10 minutes of running (light run week), 3:20 of cycling, and 1:05 minutes of swimming — covering a grand total of 62.71 miles over 6 days. —- —- —- This is very early in the training. By week 13 of the training I will have 7+ hours of bike training alone, plus 21 miles of running and 5,000+ meters of swimming.

Yes, this training is a HUGE time commitment, so I must publicly thank my family for supporting me once again during this crazy goal of mine. My beautiful bride is extremely generous in allowing me time to do this while she takes care of the 5 kids!

I am very pleased.  This past week of training went very well for me.  I hit all of my targets, and did all of my workouts without cutting them short.  This means that I got in 3 swims, 3 bike trainer sessions and 3 runs AND one rest day!  My swim total for the week was 3450 meters, my time on the bike was 4.25 hours and my runs totaled 8.5 miles.

I am of course still early in my prep for the Raleigh IM 70.3 race in May, but it is always good to celebrate a good week of training.  The training totals for this week are small, but they steadily increase until it becomes what most people would call crazy.  I will do this, I will set a Personal Record at this year’s Raleigh 70.3

I feel strong and energetic (and I am dropping weight quickly!)!

Here is my plan for getting fit enough to set a personal record at the next Raleigh IM 70.3 race, which comes up at the end of May.  As you can see, I am a big believer in writing down my plan, it will help me achieve my goals by keeping me on track and held accountable.  This plan has the buy-in of my family as well, because without their support, I would be nothing.

There is a lot of work ahead of me… but I can do it… I will do it.

Oh — I also have a new toy coming… check back next week and I will let  you in on the secret.

It has been a long time since I have written anything here.  I have been through one of the most difficult periods of my life in recent months.  My father passed away after a way too brief battle with lymphoma.  I carry with me many unresolved issues – and struggle to find a way to deal with it all.

One way I am dealing with it is planning for the birth of my 5th child.  My baby is due just after Thanksgiving – giving us something very positive to be thankful for.

Another way I am dealing with it is focusing on my training.  I am now signed up for the Ironman Raleigh 70.3 race in June of 2013.  This is my ‘A’ race for the year.  I also have an Olympic distance tri, a 5k running race and a 1/2 marathon on my calendar for April.  This “off season” will have a heavy focus on running.  My training plan has me running 6 days a week.  I will also push myself hard on the bike via Jorge’s plan and my new trainer.  Hopefully this level of focus will allow me to see great gains between now and June.

My Sunday consisted of me getting up, knocking out 1.5 Kilometers in the pool – then jumping on my bike for a “quick” 23 miles.  My goal was to be done with the ride before 9:30 am as the heat was going to be brutal later in the day.

Today’s Workout:

Plan: 29 minutes in the pool – 1:37 on the bike

Actual: 29 minutes in the pool (1500 meters) – 1:13 on the bike (22.86 miles @ 18.79mph)
